Workshop: “Authenticity and Modernity in the Palestinian Context”
The Palestinian Center for Research & Cultural Dialogue (PCRD) in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, conducted a workshop on the topic “Authenticity and Modernity in the Palestinian Context” on 26 September 2018 in Tulkarem. The main learning objective was to promote the awareness of youth on how to reconcile between authenticity and modernity and how to make the former a tool not a harness towards modernity. The workshop tried to raise the awareness of youth on the different schools of thought vis-à-vis modernity. The pillars of modernity as follows: Reason and Rationality, Freedom, Historicism, Secularism and Equality. The main questions which were highlighted and discussed among the participants were : to which extent are politics & society in Palestine are rational and whether the individuals are able to exercise the authority of reason. In addition to that the question about to which degree are politics & society in Palestine secular and whether the individual can exercise his/her freedoms in the public spheres, but also the question of equality between genders and the distribution of tangible and intangible resources was subject of discussion.
