A Delegation of Scholars and Businessmen on an information visit to Germany

Following the invitation of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, Jerusalem Office, to the partner organizations of the Foundation “Palestine Society for Science and Technology” PALAST and the “Palestinian Federation of Industry” PFI, a group of University Professors and representatives of the Palestinian private sector visited Germany, in particular the federal “State of North Rhine-Westphalia” NRW from 6-13 July 2019. The professors are members of the scientific societies, which are part of the structure of PALAST. They come from the Universities of Al-Najah in Nablus and Hebron. Three members of the delegation represent PALAST, two from PFI and three members are staff of PALAST.
The academics represent the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, agriculture and engineering.
The objective of the visit was sharing German experiences in the fields of scientific research and cooperation models between universities with the private sector and financial models of strengthening research capacities.
The programs started with an introduction to the German political and administrative system. Then the delegation visited the research centre in the city of Jülich and the University of Aachen. In Jülich, they got to learn about their research program in which 18 Palestinian scholars in their PhD programs are enrolled.
In the state chancellery in Düsseldorf, the group was introduced to the relationship between Palestine and the state of NRW. A meeting with vice president of the state Parliament took place at the parliament to learn about the parliamentary work, followed then by an overview in the ministry of economics about the state engagement in innovation and digitalization of the state. The perspective of cooperation between both sides was the topic at the state Ministry of Education. A visit at the famous Max Planck institute and at the German Research Foundation in Bonn took place about their research activities and cooperation with the universities and the private sector. In the federal ministry of education and research in Bonn, the delegation was introduced to the cooperation programs with Palestine.

In the last two days, visits were made to different business Hubs, Start-ups and the world's famous BAYER Company for pharmaceuticals and chemicals in Leverkusen and Bonn as well as at the university of applied sciences . In the city of Cologne, a member of the city council introduced the work of the council and the challenges the city is facing.
